Wednesday, October 2, 2024

In an effort to make voter education and registration more accessible for Yolo County residents, the Public Defender’s Office, Probation, and ACE-Elections are collaborating to host a series of voter registration and education outreach events. These initiatives are intended to inform residents about their voting rights and facilitate the registration process.

"Empowering our residents through accessible voter education is vital to strengthening our democracy. By collaborating across departments, we are ensuring that every Yolo County citizen has the opportunity to engage in the electoral process," stated Lucas Frerichs, Chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors.

Upcoming events will be held at various locations throughout the county, providing community members the opportunity to engage directly with representatives from the various partners. The schedule is as follows:

The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy, yet millions of Americans remain disenfranchised due to misinformation surrounding voting rights, particularly among those with historical convictions. In California, individuals with prior offenses automatically regain their voting rights upon release from incarceration. “Unfortunately, many are unaware of their eligibility, which results in significantly lower registration rates among those who have completed their sentences,” says Jesse Salinas, Yolo County Assessor/Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters. “It is crucial that we raise awareness and provide the necessary resources to empower these individuals to exercise their right to vote and participate fully in our democracy.”

"Everyone should have a say in their future. Voting lets people do that," says Tracie Olson, Yolo County’s Public Defender. The Yolo County Public Defender’s Office is committed to providing quality legal representation, ensuring a fair justice system, and empowering individuals to reintegrate into society with their full rights restored.

These outreach events not only promote voter registration but also assist in confronting systemic barriers and misinformation surrounding voting rights. Participants will learn about their eligibility and the steps necessary to register, reinforcing the importance of civic engagement and participation in the democratic process for all Yolo County residents.
